MISS GAY AND MISS TRANSSEXUAL AUSTRALIA 2015

Weekend Notes, Monique Thorpe, January 2015

A night like no other. The annual Miss Gay and Transsexual Australia pageant is a wonder to behold. Beyond the glamour of the costumes and the danger of the sky-high heels worn by the contestants, is a sentiment and sense of occasion that almost moved me to tears the first time I attended this event two years ago. The annual pageant is coined as "an alternative beauty pageant with a mission of promoting awareness for better understanding and acceptance of the transgender community", however it is so much more than that.

MAN, I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN

Melbourne Weekly, July 31, 2012

In a suburban garage, four glamorous women dance for the camera against a sparkling silver backdrop.

I Am What I Am, a song made famous by Gloria Gaynor during the 1980s, blasts from the speakers: "I am what I am, I don't want praise I don't want pity, I bang my own drum, some think it's noise I think it's pretty, and so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle, why not try to see things from a different angle..."

It'd a fitting anthem for four transsexuals and a drag queen.

And this week, Doncaster will get to join the chorus at the Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia Beauty Pageant held at the Shoppingtown Hotel.
